Disclosure: this site is made by the MATCHUPS team. Facts about other apps come from their own pages, checked in November 2026.

Squabbit and MATCHUPS both help you score a golf trip. One is an all-rounder. One is built for the two-team trip.

We make MATCHUPS. So this page sticks to facts from each app's own site and App Store page, checked in November 2026.

The short answer

  • Pick MATCHUPS if your group is on iPhone, has 4, 8 or 12 players, and wants a two-team trip cup with side games, a lock-screen scoreboard and end-of-trip awards.
  • Pick Squabbit if you want one free app for trips, leagues and outings, need Stableford, or have an uneven or larger group.

Price

Squabbit's free plan is generous. Its pricing page lists unlimited players, every format, live leaderboards and handicaps, group chat and a public tournament website for free.

Its paid plans add polish. Tournament Pro is $29.99 per event or $99.99 a year. It adds printable scorecards, sponsor logos, an embeddable leaderboard and AI scorecard import. Player Pro is $59.99 a year or $5 per event, for personal stats and an ad-free app.

MATCHUPS is free to download and free to host with four players. Eight or twelve players is a one-time $49.99.

Group size

Squabbit handles any size. MATCHUPS needs exactly two equal teams of 4, 8 or 12.

If you have 10 players, MATCHUPS will not fit the tournament. Squabbit will.

Formats

Squabbit lists many more formats, including Stableford and a Ryder Cup format.

MATCHUPS focuses on the formats friend trips play most: Stroke, Match, Best Ball, Scramble, Skins, High/Low and Low/Low, with Hammer as a side game. It does not do Nassau, Wolf or Stableford.

The feel of the trip

This is where MATCHUPS puts its effort. The trip is set up as two teams over one to five rounds. Live scoring shows on a lock-screen scoreboard. At the end, there are awards and AI pro-style headshots. The goal is a trip that feels like an event.

Squabbit is built for organizers who run many kinds of events. Trips, leagues, clubs, fundraisers. Its strength is range.

What MATCHUPS does not do

No Android. No Nassau, Wolf or Stableford. No GHIN sync. Teams must be equal, 4, 8 or 12 players.

A note on handicaps

Squabbit's free plan lists live leaderboards and handicaps. If your group plays net and wants handicap strokes handled, check how each app does it before the trip.

MATCHUPS does not connect to GHIN. If your group needs official GHIN indexes pulled in, choose another app.

Setup checklist for either app

  • Pick the app at least a week before the trip.
  • Get every player to download it and join the event.
  • Do a test hole in the parking lot or at home.
  • Agree who can edit scores.
  • Decide the formats for every round before day one.
